Marcus King Band

Songwriter. Guitarist. Singer. Bandleader. At only 20 years of age, Marcus King’s dazzling musical

ability is evident throughout The Marcus King Band. Operating within the fiery brand of American

roots music that King calls "soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock," it highlights King’s gorgeous,

rough-hewn vocals, soaring guitar work and heartfelt songwriting all amidst a group of masterful

musicians who, together, are quickly becoming one of the country’s most sought after live acts. Raised in

Greenville, South Carolina, King was brought up on the blues, playing shows as a pre-teen sideman with

his father. Going beyond the sonic textures of his acclaimed 2015 debut; The Marcus King Band

broadens his sound, touching upon everything from funky R&B to Southern soul and Americana in the

process. His band gets in on the action too, stacking the songs with blasts of swampy brass, a lock-step

rhythm section and swirling organ. Ever the multi-tasker, King bounces between several instruments,

handling electric and acoustic guitar — as well as pedal and lap steel — while driving each track home

with his soulful, incendiary voice.

The New Mastersounds & Turkuaz

Simon Allen and Eddie Roberts had played together as The Mastersounds, though with a different bassist and no organ. Through friends and the intimate nature of the Leeds (UK) music scene, Pete Shand and Bob Birch were added on bass and Hammond respectively and The New Mastersounds were born. Though it was raw, and more of a boogaloo sound at first, it was powerful from the start. Their first rehearsal was hot enough for Blow it Hard Records to release on two limited-edition 7” singles. Fast-forward 15 years and the recorded catalogue boasts 24 more 7” singles, 9 studio albums, 2 live albums, 1 remix album and 3 compilation albums, released variously in UK, USA and Japan, where they continue to tour extensively. Joe Tatton, another veteran of the Leeds scene, joined back in 2007, replacing Bob Birch on organ and piano. As an example of the respect this band commands, Peter Wermelinger – DJ, collector, and author of the crate-diggers’ bible The Funky & Groovy Music Lexicon – places the 2001 NMS track “Turn This Thing Around” in his all-time top-ten tunes, along with the likes of Eddie Harris, Funkadelic, and Herbie Hancock. The New Mastersounds are at the very top of an elite selection of acts that bring the true soul out of funk.

Turkuaz is a 9-piece “Powerfunk” outfit from Brooklyn, NY, whose modern take on the classic funk sound has established them as leaders in the funk revolution that’s currently taking place in the genre. Blending elements of Pop, R&B, and Soul with their distinct aggressive funk core, Turkuaz sounds like the musical love child of Sly & the Family Stone and Talking Heads. Turkuaz’s sound is more accessible than ever and poised to break out to a more mainstream audience. With a playful feel that evokes the best of 80s dance music, Turkuaz’s tightly arranged songs are built on thick grooves, driven by powerhouse rhythm and horn sections, as well as four distinct vocalists.

The Soul Rebels

2014 was an explosive year for THE SOUL REBELS riding high from touring four continents including Europe, Australia for the second year, debuting in China, selling out shows in New York City, collaborating with artists spanning from Joey Bada$$, Big Freedia, Lotus and The String Cheese Incident to sharing stages with Kanye West, The Allman Brothers Band, Gary Clarke Jr., John Mayer, Jack White, Dave Mathews and Disclosure. Closing out the year, The Soul Rebels toured with Trombone Shorty and returned home to record the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s official soundtrack, quoted by the iconic festival as “Soul Rebels, the soundtrack of Jazz Fest 2015”.

How do you follow up a year like that? As only The Soul Rebels can, with a jam packed plan for 2015 featuring touring with Umphrey’s McGee and Michael Franti, shows with Lettuce, Soulive and Joey Bada$$, collaborations, major festival appearances world-wide, recording a new album produced by Eric Krasno and an annual residency with special guests Rakim, Pharoahe Monch and Black Thought of The Roots at New York City’s Brooklyn Bowl.

The Soul Rebels started with an idea – to expand upon the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass band tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop, jazz and rock. The band has settled on an eight-piece lineup that can be heard on their international debut release Unlock Your Mind. The Soul Rebels built a career around an eclectic live show that harnesses the power of horns and drums in the party like atmosphere of a dance club. When not touring, The Soul Rebels’ weekly show at New Orleans’ Le Bon Temps Roulé is known to erupt with the kind of contagious, shout-along musical mayhem that The Rebels bring with them wherever they perform.

On their travels, The Soul Rebels have collaborated live and played with notable artists and bands including Metallica, Green Day, Maceo Parker, Galactic, Slick Rick, Trombone Shorty, Joey Bada$$, Rakim, Prodigy of Mobb Deep, Big Freedia, The String Cheese Incident, Rahzel, Pharoahe Monch, Styles P of The Lox, Eric Krasno, Suzanne Vega and John Medeski as well as being billed on shows with Snoop Dogg, Alabama Shakes, Estelle, Cee Lo Green, Arcade Fire, Ice Cube, George Clinton, Shaggy and many others.

The Soul Rebels have been a mainstay at festivals all over the world, from the stages at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Outside Lands, to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Electric Forest and Austin City Limits, to recent festival appearances at the Bryon Bay Bluesfest in Australia, Shanghai Jazz Festival in China and the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Soul Rebels continue to chart new territory as they combine topnotch musicianship and songs with grooves that celebrate life in the time-honored New Orleans style.
